Red Sea–Red Square–Red Thread is a philosophical detective story tracing the long life of a short anecdote: a painter, commissioned to depict the biblical passage through the Red Sea, covers the canvas in red and explains that the Israelites have already crossed and the Egyptians have drowned. Through this joke, the book explores how thinkers and artists including Arthur Danto, Søren Kierkegaard, Henri Murger, Giacomo Puccini, and William Hogarth used the anecdote to examine art, liberty, theology, politics, bohemian life, monotheism, monism, and the monochrome.
Lydia Goehr is the Fred and Fannie Mack Professor of Humanities in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University. She is currently chair of the Department of Philosophy.
